Student Job Link's Resources

A short description about your blog

I’m a big proponent of the entrepreneurial spirit.  Considering the way that the economy is going right now, working for yourself or starting your own business can be a very wise move.

I’m not necessarily saying you should quit your job or abandon a job search; I’m just saying that it’s good to have something to fall back on.  So, with that in mind, make some business cards for yourself and give them out to anybody who could possibly use your services.

There are a lot of career choices that typically don’t translate well to starting your own business or working as an independent contractor, but in today’s digital Internet age, you’d be surprised at how your skills can translate to the independent work world.

Want to see how viable you can be as an independent contractor?  Take out a sheet of paper and write down the types of things that you would be doing in a job in your field.  Okay, now figure out how many of those things could be done over the computer.  Odds are, a lot of the duties you would be expected to perform could be done over by an independent contractor over the Internet.

Now, here’s where the use of business cards can come in really handy.  While you’re on your job search, hand out your business cards to everybody that you interview with.  Say something to the effect of, “If you should ever need my skills for a project, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

Working on a project by project basis is not for everyone and you may not be able to make enough money to support yourself doing this, but you may just open the door to new employment opportunities or, at the very least, some part time work to get you a little extra spending money.
