Perhaps you’re looking for your first job and are trying to figure out whether to apply for that job or not. People close to you may tell you that this is not a time to be choosy. However, getting to know yourself and what you like and dislike is important to ensure a smooth flowing career process. Your first job doesn’t have to be your dream job. In fact, it rarely is.
But with a little bit of thought, you can land a job that will help you grow as a person and assist you in determining which career path you’re going to chose when you grow up.
Use putting yourself through a lot of hassle only to find out after a couple of days that you wouldn’t be seen dead doing that kind of job. That will only lead to frustration and disappointment.
So how do you go about determining whether that particular job being advertised is appropriate for you and your personality?
The best way to go about this is to make a list of the things that you like and things that you’re not particularly fond of.
o Are you a people person? Or do you enjoy working by yourself? You might be an introvert, and you’re looking to break out of that trait so you’d like to land a job that will have you in close contact and interaction with people. Nothing wrong in looking for a job that will give you a personal challenge. In fact, you might find out later that it was the wisest choice you have ever made.
o Would you prefer flexibility so that you can manage your time more effectively or do you think that a 9-5 job is the best option for you?
o Do you love the outdoors and would possibly prefer a job that will have you spending more time outdoors? Or are you the complete opposite and love an office environment?
o Do your research to find out what kind of people work with the company. Do you see yourself fitting in?
o Do you want this job strictly to pay the bills? Or do you want to at least use it to set you off on the right career path? Do you rate yourself as a quick learner? Will training be provided?
Getting to know your likes and dislikes is all part of growing up and developing your personality. The right job can serve as an incredible learning tool that can come in handy when you’re ready to take on a much more demanding corporate job or even start your own business.
