No roommate situation is ever going to be perfect, but by giving it some thought before you actually choose a roommate and things can turn out fine.

Friends and roommates are two completely different things.  Just because you think your best friend is the coolest person on this planet, doesn’t mean that he or she will make a good roommate.

It’s wise to be realistic and be prepared for conflicts because they will happen.

Before choosing a roommate, you must first know what kind of person YOU are and what kind of roommate you’re going to be. Be honest.  Following are a set of questions that you need to ask to determine what kind of roommate would be the ideal choice for you.

Are you tidy? Does a messy room drive you insane? Are you a slob and couldn’t care less?

What about morals? Do you think you will have issues with behavior that goes against your morals? Or are you the “live and let live” kind of person?

What about studying? Do you need total silence or do you love listening to music while studying? Do you prefer to study in your room or somewhere on campus? How much “quiet time” do you think you’ll need to do well in your exams?

Sharing/Trusting – How easily do you trust people? Would you be annoyed if your roommate eats your cereal or if he or she borrows something from you and never gives it back?

Sleeping – Do you like to go bed early? Or are you a late sleeper? Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Visiting – Do unexpected visitors/guests annoy you? Or is it the norm for you to have friends, dates, classmates sleep over?
