Student Job Link's Resources

Science and its applications have always been an important part of the job market and the economy.  After all, where would the entire consumer electronics industry be without scientific advancements?
Designing an oven that can connect to the internet isn’t exactly what a lot of people have in mind when they embark on a science career, though.  Most seek a career that will advance scientific knowledge and improve the average person’s quality of life.  With that in mind, there are three science-driven industries that are set to make incredible advances in the coming years, and companies in all three industries are actively recruiting the best and brightest scientific minds available.

The three fields are medicine, genetics, and energy.

The baby boomer generation is reaching retirement age, and the need for quality health-related technology and knowledge is only going to increase the older the boomers get.  Also, this need will drive many other industries.

Are you a physicist?  Well, your knowledge will be needed to develop the diagnostic imaging technologies that will be used in hospitals.  Maybe you’re a materials and composites specialist?  The development of materials for the transportation and storage of medical supplies is vital, as is the development of materials for devices that are placed inside the body, like the next generation of pacemakers.  Medicine and medical technology touches on a lot different fields, so keep that in mind.

Genetics is related to medicine and there will be a lot of overlap concerning the tools and technologies involved, but a career in genetics encompasses much more than medicine.  Research on specific uses of individual genes is heavily underway and the tools used for that research (like computing systems) will impact various branches of science.

Last up is energy.

The gradual development of non-fossil fuels over the past few decades has reached a fever pitch.  The demand for clean, efficient, and cheap energy is rising by the day, and there are a lot of companies who want to develop that technology, and those companies need qualified scientists to work for them.

This field includes the development of new energy systems, the upgrading or retooling of existing systems, and the safe decommissioning of obsolete systems.

Whatever branch of science you are pursuing, you are bound to find career opportunities in at least one, if not all, of these three fields.
