Now, there is certainly a lot of room for debate about whether or not governments have been good about exercising that type of control, but the fact remains that they will always try. Think about TV. Who sets the standards for the broadcast signal type? Who verifies and protects patents on new TV technology? Government bodies do.
If you’re looking for a job in a science related field, government regulatory organizations are a great place to check out.
Where do you find out about these opportunities? Check the Internet. Governments like to talk about the types of things that they are doing to keep their citizens safe, so you’ll find plenty of information about exactly what types of organizations are out there and what they do.
Also, a lot of these organizations have various satellite offices around the country, meaning that you may not have to relocate that far in order to find a good job. Here’s a good example: water quality control.
For every major river, lake, and aquifer that is used to provide drinking water, there needs to be a group of people to make sure that the water continues to be safe for human consumption, and there needs to be people who make sure that the systems in place to deliver the water from its source to population centers are kept in good working order.
Take a walk around your house and think about the utilities that you have. My quick look: telephone service, television service, Internet service, water, electricity, sewage systems, and heating systems. For every one of these systems, there’s a government agency that deals with it.
