Anyone can get a degree if they really put their mind to it, but not everyone has the right people skills and business etiquette to be successful in the business world. It’s never too early to start practicing and enhancing your business etiquette skills, since knowing how to deal with people will also do you a world of good during your student years.
Business etiquette is so much more than having a good business wardrobe. Although a smart personal appearance is important, it is fairly easy to achieve this if you have the right attire.  A good first impression based solely on appearance wears out very quickly if you don’t have the personality to support it.

Following are three basic tips that will help you enhance your business etiquette skills.

Telephone techniques

How do you communicate over the phone? The telephone is frequently the first point of contact with customers.  Once you’re in the business world, you will also be using the telephone for various business oriented tasks such as negotiating and even closing deals.  It is therefore very important, to start paying attention to your telephone skills even while still at college.   Effective telephone techniques is not rocket science. It’s just a conscious decision to behave in a certain way that one makes to enhance the whole experience.

For example, even if you don’t feel like smiling, make an effort and smile when you answer the phone.  You will find that the caller will notice this and react more positively to what you have to say.

Face to face communication

When meeting someone face to face, give them a firm confident handshake and say your name slowly and clearly. Look people in the eye and smile warmly while doing this. Did you ever notice how with some people you take an immediate liking to them simply by the way they greet you?

Not everyone you meet in a business scenario, will have the time and/or will be willing to exchange conversation with you, so practicing your greeting skills enhances your chances of success in the future.

Keeping your cool

If something goes wrong at your college or school, how do you react? Sometimes people get upset with you no matter what you do or don’t do. How do you typically behave in such a  situation?  Learn to empathize with the people involved and practice the art of being a good listener.  Offer to help if you can and take the necessary actions to deliver. Losing your temper is the EASIEST thing to do. If you learn to keep your cool in any situation, you will be paving your way to a successful business career because the business world is full of unpleasant and nerve-wrecking scenarios. If you practice on keeping calm in small everyday situations, you will reap the rewards later on when you face a tough business scenario.

Simply put, implementing business etiquette is all about making your life easier, because when you’re confident in any given situation you will have the ability to influence people and focus on getting things done efficiently and effectively.
