Student Job Link's Resources

The job market is not in great shape right now, so employment openings for recent college graduates aren’t as available as they once were.  But despite this, there are still opportunities for those who know where to look, and one of those places is in part time job listings.
Generally, companies will hire part time workers for a few different reasons:  the position isn’t something that people can make a good living on full time; the work may be temporary based on the time of year or a certain business contract; or the company doesn’t have the money to hire somebody full time.

What you want to focus on are the second and third reasons on that list.

Temporary or part time work dependent on a business contract is usually pretty easy to spot.  The ad for the job will say something along the lines of “We need qualified workers to help with the completion of a specific project.”  While this may seem off-putting to somebody looking for a full time career, a position like this may be worth your time.

First of all, it allows you to get experience in a certain industry, and second of all, it lets you make contacts within that industry.  If you do a good job, you may receive an offer for full time work once the time period is up and, failing that, you’ll at least be on their short list of people to call when they need more temporary workers. The third option listed above is one that you’ll find a lot of nowadays.  Companies don’t have the financial means to hire somebody full time to do a certain job, so they will hire somebody to do some of the duties part time and spread the other work around other people who are already employed there full time.

If you pursue this part time opportunity, you have the chance to impress the management with your abilities and have a chance at full time work eventually.  For example, let’s say that you take a part time job and after a few months, somebody else in the company decides to quit.

The company now has the option of either hiring another full time worker, hiring another part time worker (further dispersing work duties), or promoting you to full time.  If you have proved yourself, then it is much easier for the company to promote you than have to worry about training somebody else when you’ve already adjusted to the company’s environment. Don’t think of part time work as settling for less, think of it as an investment that can really pay off.
