The Terry Fox Foundation
What Sets Us Apart... A Single Dream. A World of Hope.
This phrase symbolizes the spirit of The Terry Fox Foundation, celebrating Terry’s legendary cross-country Marathon of Hope to raise funds for cancer research. His legacy lives on today through the continued efforts of the Foundation that was created to uphold the integrity of his wishes. With the abundance of non-profit organizations out there today, what sets The Terry Fox Foundation apart?
The Terry Fox Foundation is the second largest non-governmental fundraiser for cancer research in Canada. To date, a total of $400 million (CDN) has been raised by the Foundation. With only 3 cents of every dollar raised going towards administration, and 10 cents going towards fundraising costs, The Terry Fox Foundation is an industry leader in fundraising accountability. Part of the reason can be attributed to an extremely small staff; a mere thirty-two full-time employees span the entire country coordinating local and international events. Dedicated and driven volunteers form the backbone of the organization and are the primary reason why the Foundation is able to break fundraising records year-after-year. “Quite simply, every dollar raised for cancer research is generated through the efforts of our volunteers. They give the public the chance to contribute to a cause that affects all of us. Our promise to them is to fund the best quality research in Canada,” says Darrell Fox, National Director of The Terry Fox Foundation.
In a world where it is widely believed that sponsorship is necessary to garner non-profit support, the Foundation stands alone. Over 2 million event participants each year is confirmation that people and businesses will give unconditionally, as Terry did in 1980. Unlike many non-profit organizations, the Foundation does not offer corporate sponsorship opportunities. Instead of exchanging profile for dollars, all funds raised by The Terry Fox Foundation result from the thousands of communities, schools and corporations who hold Terry Fox Runs or special events for cancer research and from memorial, celebratory and planned giving by individuals.
Terry’s inspiring story of hope and determination has crossed international borders. There are approximately 40 countries around the world hosting annual Terry Fox Runs, including Cuba, China, Ireland and the USA.
With no registration fees and no required minimum amount of donations, the Terry Fox Foundation believes in fundraising events that are open to everyone. As Terry articulated, “If you’ve given a dollar, you are part of the Marathon of Hope.”
The Terry Fox Foundation is raising more than just money for cancer research; it is raising the bar for non-profit fundraising accountability while honouring the wishes of a true Canadian hero. Terry once said, “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.” We thank you for being a part of Terry’s legacy.
