FRASER LAKE CAMP OVERVIEW Our Christian roots have a strong impact on why we are here in the business of camp and the mission of Willowgrove drives the camp we run and the staff we hire. Not only is Fraser Lake run at a low cost to ensure that all kids have an opportunity to come to camp, it also has a Hand-In-Hand program that subsidizes camp fees for children who would not otherwise come to camp. Throughout the year we do a lot of fundraising and promotion to educate people about our Hand-In-Hand program and last summer we helped children come to camp who without the money received from Fraser Lake would not have been able to attend. We also have a one-on-one program, which enables campers who have special needs to come and fully participate in our program. These campers are partnered with a counsellor who helps to integrate the camper into the program and ensure the camper has a safe and rewarding camp experience. Once campers get to camp, we put a lot of focus on relationships and developing those between staff and campers, campers and campers, campers and God, staff and God. At camp we encourage these relationships through the programs we run, but it is most evident in the devotional times at night. This is a great opportunity for staff to talk to campers about Christian principles, their own faith stories and gives the campers a glimpse into their counsellors’ spiritual journey. Devotional times at night are a good time for reflection on the day, a chance to wind down with friends and God, as well as a good time for counsellors to help their campers as well as themselves to move along the spiritual continuum. This is a great time for staff to act as mentors to the campers and allows for questions and discussion in a positive and safe environment. It is an opportunity for Fraser to promote what we believe is important and why. The intent is not to threaten or make anyone become like us, but to encourage positive values and morals and to tell people why we are the way we are. At Fraser Lake it is imperative that the actions and attitudes of our staff reflect the mission. When we hire staff, we don’t just look at hard skills, we hire people who have a strong calling to serve children, have a sense of responsibility, have the ability to lead, have the ability to witness and because they enjoy children. Camp has so many opportunities for staff to have an impact on the life of a child. We want all of our staff to realize the potential they have. By making positive decisions, allowing campers to get to know you, letting them know you care about them equally and encouraging their development, you will be making a difference! At camp we need to be constantly looking for opportunities for our campers to develop and empower them to make choices to positively affect them and promote their personal growth while they are at camp.
